Guinness Cup 2017

This was played at the club on Sunday 4th June 2017.  The Walsham triple of Shirley White, Tracy Webb and Jeremy Webb notably and deservedly retained the Guinness Cup on Sunday at the St Botolph’s & District Bowl s Club.

The 2016 winners were the only team from 24 entrants to win their four group matches.  That qualified them for the final of 10 ends against Mark James, Pat Jennings and Ann Lilley of Ixworth and early counts of 4 and 3 had Walsham leading by 7-1.  Ixworth responded with a 3 and a 2, and then an exchange of 3s made the score 10-9 to Walsham at 7 ends.  Walsham gained 2 on end 8 but end 9 was decisive. Ixworth held two and in trying to add a third to tie the match, the jack was disturbed, Walsham took the shot and led by four with one end to play.  A final single to Ixworth was only a consolation.

The play-off for third and fourth was between Sonya Foreman, Fred Spinks and Ralph Marsh of Tuddenham and Richard Hayden, Bob Stubbs and Scott Parrin of Stanton.  Surprisingly Tuddenham won all of the odd ends and Stanton were almost as dominant on the even ends.  However Tuddenham broke the sequence on end 6, and that contributed to victory by 11-6.

The weather and hard work of the members of St Botolphs contributed to an enjoyable and successful day.  The cup and prizes were presented by Anthony Foulger, President-Elect of the Frames Conservatories Direct Bury & District Bowls League, and his chosen charity Arthritis Research UK will benefit by £168.
