This is the March 2018 copy of the Club's Newsletter

President, Maurice Costello, writes: We are now close to the start of the new season and I look forward to seeing you on the green or down at the Club. To start on a sad note, most of you will have heard of the death of Michael Sparkes (Sparky) a few days ago. Sparky was Club Captain a number of times, lastly in 2005. For those of us who played with him, we shall always remember his unique way of skipping on a rink! We have a very full programme this season with some high profile county and league fixtures and I ask for your support in all areas of the Club’s activities. I add my thanks to Anthony Foulger and Preston Downing for the transformation of the kitchen. I am sure those who use it, both members and outside caterers, will be very impressed. Lastly, to all bowlers, good fortune for the season. Our first league fixture is 19thApril, the ‘B’ team in the Bury League away at Elmswell.

Message from the Chairman: Viv Sword - It seems hardly possible that we are now close to Opening Day – I hope we will be blessed with weather as good as that which we enjoyed last year! We have had a busy ‘closed’ season with a number of successful social events. It has certainly been busy for Preston and Anthony who - yet again – gave up weeks of their own time, to completely gut the old kitchen and install a new, more modern version. I’m sure Julia and her catering team will appreciate the new equipment and surroundings.I would like to add to our President’s comments on the sad death of Michael Sparkes. Michael, with others, worked tirelessly establishing the club green, and helped to raise the funds needed to pay for the new club. He was a larger than life character, those of us who were privileged to bowl regularly with him, will remember him for his humour and generosity, as well as his caustic one liners when one failed to meet his bowling expectations! He will be missed. The Committee would like to thank everyone who has contributed to preparing the clubhouse, the green and the surrounding areas for the new season. It is most definitely a club to be proud of and we have been asked to host a number of prestigious events throughout the Summer months. We are, first and foremost, a bowls club and I would like to wish all Team Captains a successful season’s bowling. The Thursday ‘A’ Team will need to battle hard to stay in the First Division and the Monday ‘A’ Team will be fighting to get back into the top division. The Tuesday ‘A’ team will be hoping to replicate last season’s success as Cup finalists. I hope all of you enjoy your bowling and the friendship of fellow bowlers. I very much look forward to seeing you on Saturday April 14th.

Clive Foskett, Treasurer.

We wish all the new appointments and captains well for the new season.

Sandy Sargeant: Club Captain - The new season will soon be upon us – let’s hope it is a warm and sunny one. Last year some teams struggled to get players. It would be helpful if more members made themselves available to play in leagues. I hope to arrange for a qualified coach to come to our club early in the season, but we need to know if anyone would be interested. Please contact me by phone 07847 263713 or email: anyone wants this. We need a few members to make this worthwhile. Although not a coach, I have many years  experience, and am happy to help – just ask.Wishing everyone a happy and successful year.

Green Committee Chairman – Anthony Foulger - What a contrast from last year when we had a dry February. The weather has been appalling. Due to the snow, severe frosts, rain and strong winds it has been impossible to work on the green. The damp conditions have encouraged the growth of quite a lot of moss and unfortunately it has not been possible to spray and eradicate. We need to get rid of this before we can feed the green. Also, it has not been warm enough to promote growth of the grass. Hopefully, fingers crossed the weather will improve and we will not have to postpone opening day.We have a lot of prestigious matches coming up this season, so hopefully we can maintain the green to the standard we had last season.A big thank you to all those members who turned out to put the green to bed and also removing the old shabby ditch surrounds. At the time of writing John has ordered the new surrounds and hopefully it will all be in place for the start of the bowling season!!I also hope we will have enough volunteers to go on the cutting rota and a full complement of switchers!

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED!!  If you are willing to help switch the green or cut the grass please contact Anthony Foulger.

NEW SHIRTS / JACKETS: If anyone would like a new shirt or jacket for the bowls season please contact Julia Maycock as soon as possible. CLUB BADGE FOR BLAZERS: Julia is looking also at sourcing a club badge that could be put on to club blazers. If you are interested in having a badge for your blazer, please let Julia know.
